Partner Matthew McNicholas and Senior Lawyer Douglas Winter were recognized on TopVerdict’s Top Labor & Employment Verdicts in California in 2023 for achieving two significant verdicts. The firm’s $10.1 million verdict for an LAPD Captain in a discrimination and retaliation case was listed as a Top 10 Labor & Employment Verdict and its $2.8 million verdict for a Riverside police officer in a ticket quota retaliation case was listed as a Top 20 Labor & Employment Verdict.

In Vince v. City of Los Angeles, et al., McNicholas & McNicholas represented LAPD Captain Stacey Vince against the Los Angeles Police Department in her claims that she had been retaliated and discriminated against for reporting discrimination against her husband, who was also an LAPD employee. After a nearly three-week trial, attorneys McNicholas and Winter obtained a $10.1 million verdict.

In Casteel v. City of Riverside, et al., McNicholas & McNicholas represented now-retired Riverside Police Department Officer Shawn Casteel against the City of Riverside. When the RPD implemented an unlawful citation and arrest quota, Casteel refused to comply and repeatedly reported it to his chain of command. For speaking out about the quota, Casteel was retaliated against and subjected to adverse employment actions. Following a month-long trial, attorneys McNicholas and Winter secured a $2.85 million verdict.
